Knockdown South
2005 Knockdown South Records

"Knockdown South wins by TKO...if not by a full-fledged knockout. Grab a malt liquor tall boy and crank this baby up to 10. It ain't "Freedom Rock," but it will indeed set you free!"

- BluesSpeak

"Mathus has been Buddy Guy's backup guitarist of choice since 2001's "Sweet Tea," and his deep understanding of all Southern forms translates into his jagged playing. He can cut through riffs as thick as the Mississippi mud. His vocals resemble his playing, a little wobbly but wise, and full of dangerous edges."

- Stamford Advocate

Jimbo Mathus Knockdown South is the debut release for Knockdown South records and is his first release since returning to his native Mississippi one year ago. 2004 found Mathus, as usual, in a myriad of musical roles.

Following the success of Buddy Guy’s 2000 Sweet Tea on which Mathus played second guitar, he was again cast as Buddy’s right hand man on the Grammy award winning Blues Singer and subsequent national tour. described the tour as “Buddy Guy with a minimalist backing of upright bass, drums and searing slide guitar (courtesy of the talented Jimbo Mathus)” and “featuring a dangerous six string showdown between Mathus and Guy.” He was then hired as Buddy’s guitarist for a tour with the famed Double Trouble as rhythm section.

Simultaneously, Mathus opened the Delta Recording Service in Clarksdale Mississippi and recorded dozens of artists. Most notable of these was Elvis Costello’s new single “Monkey to Man.” He also did various side man jobs in the delta jukes and in studios with the likes of North Mississippi All Stars, Jessie May Hemphill and Jim Dickinson.

Among all this he played over 100 dates with his own group Knockdown South. Knockdown South is a continuation of his old band the Knockdown Society which started in 1997 with the release of Plays Songs for Rosetta (Mammoth), continued with the 2000 release National Antiseptic (Mammoth) and most recently Stop and Let the Devil Ride (Fast Horse/Rycodisc) in 2002.

The main inspiration for all these recordings was in Jimbo’s words “Mississippi of my heart and soul.” Using a musical alchemy he has interpreted and reinvented Mississippi music over the last ten years.

On Knockdown South he goes into this alchemy even further, combining gut-bucket North Miss blues with electric boogie, hip hop beats, soul horn sections and even straight up honkey tonk. All this seems normal to Mathus. “My personal music vision is an all inclusive one. Music for me starts with Charley Patton and Jimmie Rogers and grows upward from there until the present. It’s all one thing and you have to consider every part of it. This is my most personal record yet, the most realistic. Either you like it or you don’t but it’s just me.”
