Biography

Cast Iron Filter’s music is unlike anything else that you’ve ever heard. So they created their own genre. It’s called Irongrass. Aggressive, powerful, and raw, it defies the accepted taxonomy of today’s music. Its essence is four great musicians ignoring prevailing pop sensibilities for the sake of well crafted and powerfully performed songs. That’s pretty much it.

The biography of the band goes like this: Dustin Edge (songwriter/vocals/acoustic guitar/harmonica) and Mike Orlando (composer/acoustic and electric mandolins/banjo/other bizarre instruments), along with a former member or two, released two self-produced compact discs under the name Cast Iron Filter during their four year tenure at Davidson College. Shortly after graduation and further evolution of the band, CIF released This Ugly Town (produced by Mark Williams). Following the disc’s release and heavy touring, the band showcased a different lineup. So, in the fall of 2002, the ‘new’ Irongrass quartet recorded and released a live album, Live From the Highway (also produced by Mark Williams). Shortly after the release, Brian Burton became the new drummer. Hailing from Grand Rapids, MI, Brian graduated from the Berkley School of Music before bringing his well-honed chops to North Carolina. Phil Skipper (bass) is in the band now, too. He is from Atlanta, GA. He joined after a few year stint with legendary blues guitarist, Tinsley Ellis. Brian and Phil tastefully layer their well-developed styles into the Irongrass sound. Now the unique Irongrass sound is thicker, and tighter, than its ever been.

Cast Iron Filter doesn’t want to be known for its biographical eloquence…as demonstrated here. It’s all about the songs. Damn good songs. So thanks for your ears, your support, and your appreciation. Ladies and gentlemen…welcome to Irongrass.
