Two DogsPopa Chubby drops a big, bad, sonic bomb with his excellent and timely new album, Two Dogs. On it, Popa explores myriad musical styles and genres while keeping it close to his rock and soul core. You’ll hear the Popa you know and love and things you haven’t heard before.

In the album’s liner notes, Popa expresses how he feels about the times we live in and expands on the inspiration behind the title song: “We have become polarized as a race. There is a battle inside each of us. Each day we rise and must choose our path calling upon each other and our own spirits for strength and courage. The dog we feed is the one that rules, the dog we starve dies of neglect. It is up to each of us to use our spirit to feed the dog that will enable all of us to thrive.”

Up All Night

Up All Night. It’s an apt title for Albert Castiglia’s seventh album: nobody sleeps when this man is in town. After 27 years of house-rocking studio albums and smack-in-the-mouth live shows, the Florida bandleader is the acknowledged master of red-raw, sweat-and-hair blues that gives it to you straight. Now, the visceral riffs and bruised soul of Up All Night make everything else sound like a lullaby. Up All Night finds Castiglia in a creative swagger after last year’s acclaimed Big Dog. What wasn’t broke then hasn’t been fixed now, with the bluesman once again recording at Dockside Studios, Louisiana, and capturing a warts-and-all mix alongside producer Mike Zito.

CalderaWritten in rural Oregon in the shadow of Mt. Hood Caldera is a blistering declaration from a band that’s progressed beyond the sum of its influences to come fully into its own. Polyrhythmics began the Journey to Caldera during a snowstorm Stargazer Farm outside Portland, Oregon where they were sequestered for several days at a songwriting retreat. The tracks came together organically with each member of the band contributing ideas and concepts that ultimately became the songs on this forthcoming double LP which were recorded at Jason Gray’s Blue Mallard Recording studio in Seattle.

“A caldera is the term for what’s left after a volcano erupts,” explains Polyrhythmics guitarist Ben Bloom. “It felt like an apropos album title considering where we are as a band right now. The last album was this explosion onto the scene for us, a statement of who we are and what we’re here to do, and this one feels like the simmering crater that comes into focus once all that smoke clears.”
